Theme
1) Race/ Racism
- Race and racism is a huge theme in the story because Marie is a reservation girl. Also, she don't have much Indian blood inside of her. In the story, the sisters would set Marie aside and despise her because she don't have the same race as them. Sister Leopolda would abuse Maria by hitting her, smack her, and pour hot water on her neck. Also, Sister Leopolda would feed Maria cold mush while she stores all the good food for the other people and the priest in the closet. This shows racism because Sister is treating Maria differently from the rest of the people. The society and the sisters are not able to accept Maria's culture and her race as a human being.
Symbol
1) Long Oak Pole
- The long oak pole is used in the beginning of the story when Sister Leopolda use it to abuse the children by hitting them in the back or the head. The pole represents the power, influence, or authority that she have among the rest. Also, the pole represents Sister Leopolda's personality as a abusive and controlling women. If sister see someone doing something wrong or that she doesn't like, she would use her pole to hit them without any hesitation. This help readers foreshadow the plot and the conflict. Readers can already foreshadow that Sister Leopolda and Marie would have a turmoil between them.
