Context

             Louise Erdrich is a famous American author born in Little Falls, Minnesota, United States on June 7th, 1954. Louise wrote several famous novels, poetry, and children books. She is the eldest out of her seven siblings. Her father (Ralph Erdrich) is German- American and her mother (Rita) is half French American and Ojibwe. Also, Louise's maternal grandfather, Patrick Gourneau served as a tribal chairman for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians for many years.

Louise's parents had an heavy influence on her to write more stories and to read more books. As a young child, Louise remembered of how her father would pay her a nickel for every story she wrote. In 1976, she attended Dartmouth College and received her BA degree in english. Then, Louise attended Johns Hopkins University in 1979 and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. Most of Louise books concentrates on culture of Native American, self identity, ancestry, and history.

Saint Marie is a short story that's part of her famous novel "Love Medicine". Love Medicine is Louise's first book. The book is published in 1984 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award during the same year. The story is about the cultures of Native Americans, Euro- Americans, and the Ojibwa culture. The story revives the lost cultural identity and for readers to learn the importance of their own ancestors.
